Jan. 18--BERKELEY, Calif.--UC Berkeley, despite its reputation as a hotbed of free-wheeling education and left-wing activism, has become a financial dynamo that pumps $1.4 billion a year into the Bay Area economy.

That's one of the conclusions in a new study that suggests UC Berkeley is one of the key pistons in the Bay Area's economic engine. The university not only supplies a large payroll for the region, it also spends plenty of money through its vendors and acts as a funnel for research and venture capital dollars in the region.
