Although understandable from its genesis, the fact that this valuable annual volume of translations is entitled business history may cause other kinds of historian to overlook it. This would be a pity, as the range of content of the four substantive article in this volume admirably illustrates.
The first, by Lothar Burchardt, entitled |Between War Profits and War Costs: Krupps in the First World War', is certainly business history. But it is also a signal contribution to the history of how war economies work. War production, and particularly war investment, by private munitions firms, is a highly uncertain business.
