WHEN TRUDIE KIBBE Reed arrived as president of Philander Smith College six years ago, termites ran the school's library.
The library for the small historically black college, just off of Interstate 630 in downtown Little Rock, was in such bad shape it received an F rating from the school's accreditation organization.
Other parts of the campus were crumbling as well. Students fiddled with decades-old equipment in the science lab. And Reed said living in the school's dorm was like staying in a Third World country.
Within a few years though, Reed is credited with erasing those images. She raised nearly $40 million, enough to cover construction ...
