COLOR IN THE FALL GARDEN is most effective when handled as a counterpoint. The obvious theme of this season throughout much of North America is the lavish orchestration of fall foliage. There is, however, another type of coloration that comes with autumn, and that is the jewel-like tones of the ripening fruits. Judged solely on the basis of size, the fruits' contribution may seem insignificant. But the intensity of their hues makes these spots of color impossible to overlook--they are the punctuation points that, when properly applied, organize and define the composition.
