Jan. 24--The DuPage Housing Authority has scrapped a plan to build affordable homes for older adults on property it bought nearly 3 1/2 years ago in downtown Wheaton.
Instead, the housing authority has reached a tentative agreement to sell the vacant office building to Wheaton as part of the city's downtown redevelopment project.
The housing authority paid $525,000 at a real-estate auction in August 1998 to buy the former Chicago Title Insurance Co. building at 120 E. Liberty Drive. The intent was to provide new office space for housing authority staff and add residential units for lower-income seniors.
