No matter how the Olympics TripleCast fares this summer, industry technologists agree that it has already succeeded in focusing operator attention on the merits of event-based pay-per-view.
On the other hand, cable technology executives say it would be wrong to view the TripleCast as a driver of new technology. For with a few exceptions, it hasn't driven fundamental product innovations.
Both Scientific-Atlanta Inc. and Jerrold Communications had considered building special, stripped-down addressable converter for the TripleCast, but neither company found operators willing to buy them.
