WASHINGTON -- The Gas Research Institute is proposing a revised funding plan that it hopes will ensure the survival of the 16-year-old research arm for the natural gas industry.

The plan includes a new funding mechanism that attempts to solve the problem of underfunding and would discourage major interstate pipeline companies from dropping out of the program.

The GRI funding plan was expected to be filed late Friday or Monday with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The plan needs FERC approval, and then pipelines can implement it in new rate filings. An industrywide technical conference is expected as part of the FERC review process.
