In February, we reported on studies that linked calcium intake to blood pressure in pregnant women and young children. This month, we would like to expand on the role of this valuable mineral in the prevention of two other potentially life-threatening diseases.
Cancer: A University of California study of some 2,000 men over a period of 20 years found that those whose daily intake of calcium was over 1,200 mg per day had the lowest incidence of colon cancer.
The reseachers suggested that increasing calcium intake to 1,200-1,400 mg daily throughout life might prevent 75 percent of the 160,000 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed each year in the United ...
