Q. I'm a woman experiencing sudden hair loss. Could it be from low iron?
A. Possibly. Though studies are scant, iron deficiency may be a much overlooked cause of hair loss in women, says Janet L. Roberts, M.D., of Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland and a specialist in the medical treatment of hair disorders.
A certain amount of shedding--50 to 100 hairs a day--is normal, as old hairs fall out to make way for new. But if hair loss is excessive, see your doctor, not only to rule out a more serious medical condition, but also to see if it's reversible.
