His name is Robert L. Carter, and while he is not a household name, he is, with the exception of Thurgood Marshall, one of the greatest attorneys to come out of the civil rights movement.

Starting in 1956, when he became the NAACP's general counsel, Carter appeared before the Supreme Court 22 times. He won 21 decisions, including NAACP vs. Alabama and NAACP vs. Fleming, both of which afforded blacks First Amendment protection to join the NAACP and other political groups without fear of reprisal from Southern segregationists. In 1972, President Richard M. Nixon appointed Carter to the federal bench in New York City.
