BAGHDAD, Iraq _ As U.S. and Iraqi forces squared off against fighters loyal to radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in the holy city of Najaf, a potentially more explosive battle began Tuesday on the streets of Baghdad's sprawling Sadr City slum.
A U.S. Army battalion moved into the district of at least 2.5 million people late in the afternoon to fight al-Sadr's al-Mahdi Army in its stronghold.
Capt. Brian O'Malley, a military spokesman, said the objective is "to flush out enemy forces" but declined to give further details.
