ATHENS -- John Tripoulas looks down from the Acropolis at Panathinaiko Stadium and only can imagine the scene 108 years earlier.

Tripoulas thinks about his grandfather, Dimitrios Golemis, finishing third in the 800-meter run at the first modern Olympics, in Athens in April 1896. He envisions a band, brought in from Golemis' native Greek island of Lefkada primarily to play for the local hero, breaking into a happy tune.

Until earlier this year, Tripoulas never had contemplated any of this. That's because he didn't even know his grandfather was an Olympics bronze medalist.
