Two recent hunts in Alabama gave me ample reason to pause and ponder the fact that deer hunting in Dixie is undergoing rapid change. Both outings took prate during the rut, which comes in January in Alabama's famed Black Belt region. At one lodge we hunted from upscale shooting houses, replete with carpeted floors to reduce sound and provide comfort, and afternoon outings found us scanning meticulously managed food plots. The owners encouraged us to take does as part of an intensive management approach designed to keep their buck-to-doe ratio in good shape. When it came to bucks, only trophies were to be shot.
