We were driving along a narrow track just after sunrise, headed up onto a high ridge that offered some good vantage points for glassing. It was the next-to-last day of the hunt, and we knew there were several good bucks running that ridge. Five of the six hunters in camp had filled out, including me. Gordy Krahn was the last holdout. I was just along for the ride, and I was confident he'd get a shot before noon.
It didn't take quite that long. On the left, the land dropped away gently into a rocky arroyo then rose again toward the main ridge a couple of miles away. Down toward the bottom, a whitetail flagged, then another and then another. In seconds, five Coues ...
