America's first direct broadcast satellite (DBS 1). which currently is being manufactured by Hughes Aircraft Co., will be the "most sophisticated civilian satellite ever built," said longtime broadcaster and satellite industry pioneer Stanley S. Hubbard, president and CEO of Hubbard Broadcasting and United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB).
The satellite is the first of two being built for USSB's DBS project and for DirecTv, the Hughes Communications Inc.'s national, DBS service.
