Former quarterback Dee Dowis was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, and he didn't start his first game at Air Force. Neither did Marty Louthan, or Beau Morgan, or Rob Perez.
But Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry thinks he has something special in freshman Shaun Carney, who was named the Falcons' starting quarterback Monday.
When Air Force plays in its home opener vs. California on Sept.4, the 19-year-old rookie from North Olmsted, Ohio, will become the first freshman in academy history to open the season under center.
