A 62-year-old Claremont man became the seventh Californian to die this year from West Nile virus, and lawmakers on Friday responded to the growing threat by proposing to appropriate $750,000 to help counties combat the mosquito-borne disease.
Walter Sheasby, a Green Party activist, died late Thursday at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Fontana, where officials said he'd been treated for 10 days for symptoms of West Nile. Statewide, 249 West Nile infections have been reported, up from Tuesday's count of 189 - a 32 percent increase.
