Cable operators will turn their focus in the 1990s away from technological aspects of fiber in favor of a more market-oriented approach in which they'll try to ascertain customer demand for new types of services that will drive fiber closer to homes.

The market-driven process comes as fiber has proven to be a startlingly cost-effective tool.

"Technology doesn't drive the business," said Jim Chiddix American Television & Communications Corp. technology senior vice president. "If there are no new services, fiber to 1,000-home nodes is 10 years out."
