States in the heavily-traveled corridor from Maine to Virginia are under heavy pressure to adopt California's low emissions vehicle regulations, including its stringent reformulated gasoline standards.
These same states also are in the process of opting into the federally-mandated reformulated gasoline program, required by law in nine heavily polluted non-attainment areas of the country. Under the Clean Air Act, however, non-attainment areas not required to provide reformulated gasoline for sale may decide to adopt more stringent fuel standards -- if approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.
