BY NATURE, A BUDGET LAPTOP HAS TO SACRIFICE some features to keep its price low, but the mainstream Toshiba Satellite A45-$250 makes some of the smartest trade-offs we've seen.
The $1,549 Satellite model we tested came to us well configured with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 CPU, 512MB of DDR SDRAM, and a 60GB hard drive. You're limited to one optical-storage option, but it's a good one: a multiformat DVD [+ or -] RW drive. A 15 inch, 1,024x768 TFT is the Satellite's main display, but it isn't a wide-aspect screen.
