Muriel Spark, who turned 86 in February, is best known as a novelist, in particular for her 1961 work "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie." But, in her brief foreword to this gathering of her poems, she writes "I have always thought of myself as a poet" and "my outlook on life and my perceptions of events are those of a poet." She also notes that "long ago, I studied verse-forms in detail and attempted to practice them," adding that "for creative writing of any sort, an early apprenticeship as a poet is a wonderful stimulant and start."
