Puget Sound Bancorp for years tweaked its competitors by promoting itself as "the last major independent commercial bank left around here."

The claim underscored the fact that by 1989, out-of-state banks had bought all of Washington State's big banks - except for Tacoma-based Puget Sound.

But two weeks ago, Puget Sound's number came up. And scarcely had the ink dried on the company's agreement to sell out to Albany, N.Y.- based KeyCorp before rival banks began to throw the independence theme back in its face.
