When Sean Lambert told office colleagues that he runs an online death pool, some were amused. Others found the idea sick: Why would he want to bet on someone dying?
"As if anything you did could actually influence what was going to happen," said Lambert, 33, a service analyst for Kodak Versamark, a digital printing company in Dayton, Ohio. "It's not like I'm going to hunt down someone and kill them just so I can score a few points on a Web site."
Death pools have been around as long as there have been offices and bettors with a macabre sense of humor. Pope Gregory XIV is said to have outlawed death pools in 1591 ...
