Mucciaroni's book chronicles the evolution of employment policy during the postwar period. It appears at appears at a time when the reputation of employment policy has been in decline for almost two decades, resources have been falling for more than a decade, and employment programs have been in eclipse under two Republican administrations. Nevertheless, Mucciaroni is optimistic that the persistence of unresolved labor market problems represents a latent opportunity for reasserting the liberal agenda in the shaping of employment policy.
