Sintered ceramic products are typically made by hot-isostatic pressing, but up to now it has been difficult to use this method to make laminated ceramic membranes that are free of defects for applications as electrical condensors, piezoelectric transducers and semiconductors. Researchers of Chubu Center of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology (AIST; Nagoya, Japan; edlinks.che.com/3645-535), in cooperation with ShintoV-Cerax Ltd. (Nagoya, Japan), have found an alternative to hot pressing that makes laminated ceramic membranes that are defect-free.
