Aug. 26--Broward County shoppers could be asked to pay an extra penny on every dollar at the cash register in two or three years to help improve mass transit.
"The arithmetic is not too hard," County Administrator Roger Desjarlais said Wednesday, speaking at a transportation forum in Fort Lauderdale sponsored by South Florida CEO magazine.
Desjarlais said a penny sales tax in Broward would raise $200 million a year to leverage billions in federal funding, which is what officials say it would take to build reliable and convenient mass transit.
