As well as threatening the US economy, high oil prices could play a role in determining the outcome of the upcoming presidential election, according to some analysts.

"High oil prices will have some impact on the upcoming election," said Ed Yardeni, an economist with Prudential Securities in New York. "People's perception of the economic outlook can also affect their opinion of the incumbent president. In a close election the president is vulnerable on everything -- including high oil prices."
