ATHENS _ Here in the land of myth, that familiar god of sports _ karma _ threw a bolt of lightning into Olympic Stadium late Friday night.
Marion Jones lunged desperately with her baton but couldn't reach her target.
The golden girl of the last Olympics is leaving without any medals, tarnished or otherwise. From five to zero.
The U.S. Olympic honchos won't have to stay up late worrying about whether to strip Jones or her relay teammates of medals. If the Balco Laboratories steroid case ever goes to trial, if Jones is ever banned from the sport, it won't change anything in the Athens record books.
