ATHENS _ Friends told Dr. Harry Papas he was crazy for volunteering to work the Summer Olympics. They tried to dissuade him, talk sense into him, make the Akron, Ohio, resident and Greek native understand something bad could happen while he was in Athens.
Papas is 77 years old. At his age trips are supposed to get shorter, risks should be minimalized.
There were so many reasons not to go, they said. His age. The 90-degree heat. The Athens blackouts. The chaotic unpredictability surrounding the Games for 2 { weeks.
What about security threats? Greece's purported unreadiness to combat terrorism? Was Papas not watching ...
