SACKED; INDEPENDENT GROCERS ONCE WERE KINGS OF THE NEIGHBORHOODS, BUT THEY'VE LONG LOST THE BATTLE WITH THE SUPER CHAIN STORES.(TRIAD)

HIGH POINT -- Neighborhood grocery store operators in High Point fought hard to survive the advent of super chain stores offering cheaper prices. At least 65 stores prospered in High Point communities until the late 1960s and early 1970s, when large-volume buying by the grocery chain stores finally took a toll on the smaller businesses.

None tried harder for survival than a handful of merchants who banded together as the High Point Red Dot Stores. Owners of these eight stores pooled their resources and bought newspaper and radio advertisements offering the same "specials."

Only one Red Dot store remains today - Horn Red Dot Superette at Ennis Street and Tryon Avenue.
