WE TRIED HARD TO FIND A CRACK IN THE IBM ThinkPad X31's armor, but this ultraportable is virtually flawless. True, the design is old-school ThinkPad--black and boxy--but the laptop is both functional and versatile.

Coming with almost every conceivable feature, the $2,324 X31 model we tested, the 2672RHU, included a 1.6GHz Pentium M, 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory, and a 5,400rpm 40GB hard drive.
