With more than 500,000 head of cattle expected to be looking for a home by the end of this year, Canadian industry and governments are honing a strategy to deal with the possibility that their main export market--the U.S.--may stay closed until after elections Nov. 2.

The latest round of meetings was held Aug. 6 in Ottawa, Ont., to review a proposed strategy built on boosting domestic slaughter capacity, diversifying markets, delayed marketings, more surveillance and income relief. Officials said a final plan could go to governments as early as next month.
