I owe David Byrne an apology. I've owed it for years, actually.

I once asked the former Talking Heads frontman, boutique-label honcho and world- music aficionado a very stupid, offensive question. It was 1997, he was touring behind his fourth proper solo album, the still-underrated "Feelings," and I was a young, inexperienced snot who thought he knew a thing or two about the guy because I had almost all of his records and had bought a couple of Luaka Bop collections.

"What do you say to those who suggest you're a cultural carpetbagger?" I asked.
