Nikki Hemming, CEO of Sharman Networks, which owns the Kazaa file swapping Web site and software, welcomed last week's appeals court ruling that two of Sharman's competitors, Grokster and StreamCast, could not be held liable for the illegal copyright infringement their users engage in. Specifically, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals said the two companies were not responsible because they don't have central servers pointing users to copyright material. It was the central servers containing the location of copyrighted tracks that did in Napster in the courts.
