When Claude Williams became warehouse manager at Saville Produce in Newport News, VA, birds were unwanted guests--and unhealthy pests. Said Williams of the conditions he found on joining the firm in 1984, "Birds were nesting in the warehouse. Sparrows and pigeons flew in whenever the warehouse doors were open for loading and unloading produce." Birds roosted on ledges and rafters of the structure, which housed potatoes, onions, and other fresh produce.
