NEW YORK, Aug. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- New research by Spencer Stuart, the global executive recruiting firm, reveals a significant increase in new women directors in 2004, with one company of the S&P 500 having equal numbers of men and women on its board.

Of the 443 new independent directors reported in S&P 500 company proxies in 2004, 105, or 24 percent, were women compared to 74, or 19 percent of new directors in 2003. Spencer Stuart said it believes this was the largest number of new women directors ever added to S&P 500 companies in one year. Overall, the number of new independent directors in 2004 was 12 percent higher than in 2003.
