Police training shell sparked wildfire near I-5
A demonstration of tear gas during a Springfield police training session caused a fire last week at Short Mountain Landfill that quickly advanced through dry brush between Interstate 5 and the landfill.
Police spokesman Rick Lewis said officers had fire extinguishers on hand for the training, but could not control the fire due to high wind and dry conditions. A tear gas projectile commonly used for riot control ricocheted from the police training range into nearby grass, starting the fire, Lewis said.
