Aug. 31--STOCKS PULL BACK IN BROAD, QUIET SELL-OFF: Wall Street welcomed Republicans, sometimes called the party of business, to the Big Apple on Monday with a broad sell-off amid the second-lowest trading volume of the year on the New York Stock Exchange.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 72.49 points, to 10,122.52. Only one of the 30 Dow industrials, Verizon Communications, posted a gain.
All four of the major indexes closed near their low points for the day, suggesting more weakness at the opening of trading Tuesday.
