Anyone who wondered how involved Barry Alvarez would be as an administrator last year, after he was named to succeed Pat Richter as athletic director at the University of Wisconsin, didn't have to wait long for an answer.

The announcement by UW chancellor John Wiley about Alvarez's new role came in February2003, even though Alvarez didn't officially assume his new title until April1, 2004, following Ricther's retirement.
