The count's actions in The Gelded Lady, although reprehensible to most modern readers, were justified as his effort to teach his audience of men to be real men. The opening lines of The Gelded Lady identify the fabliau as an exemplum. By definition, an exemplum is a pattern, model, or illustration told to provide audiences with a moral or life-guiding lesson. I will consider two specific textual examples from The Gelded Lady to demonstrate that the count is not an entirely reprehensible figure, for the tale of his apparent brutality was designed to serve as an exemplum for those husbands who have lost their authority over their wives.
