One hundred seven patients with coronary artery disease and ischemia on stress testing were randomly assigned to a 38-month program of stress management training and compared to a usual care control group.
The training consisted of sixteen 1.5-hour weekly sessions of cognitive education with graded task assignments of monitoring irrational internal autonomic thoughts, generating alternative perceptions of situations and unrealistic thoughts, progressive relaxation training and >2 sessions of EMG biofeedback.
