One of the most thrilling evenings I've spent in years happened in early June, when I was teaching an Elderhostel class in Eagle River, Wis. We drove to Shannon Lake, which is nearby. It is surrounded by mature forest and a large open area that had been clearcut a few years ago. The ground is covered with shrubs and open, mossy spots, perfect for nesting nighthawks and displaying whip-poor-wills.
Our group stood on a road listening in awe as the loud calls of the birds resonated all around us. I've never before heard so many whip-poor-wills at one time, and never heard their unique "whip-poor-will!" calls augmented by a chorus of ...
