Solitary clematis
Clematis integrifolia
This charming nonclimbing clematis - less well-known than its large-flowered, vining cousins, - forms a shrubby clump of stems 2 to 3 feet long, each clothed in leathery, dark-green leaves.
Solitary clematis blooms in early to midsummer, producing single, 2-inch-long flowers at the tips of upright stems. The indigo-violet, nodding flowers are bell-shaped with flaring, delicately pointed and twisted sepals (the showy petal-like part of clematis flowers). The flowers are followed by silky, feathery seedheads that give the plant a long-lasting ornamental effect.
