The baby, almost invisible under a mass of tubes and wires in the intensive care nursery, was normal weight, but her blood pressure was dangerously high, her electrolytes wildly out of balance. Around the incubator stood three men, a surgeon, a respected renal expert and a first-year pediatrics intern. The two older men were arguing, the surgeon insisting that the infant's kidney must be removed. The specialist disagreed. He was convinced the operation was unnecessary but didn't want to tread on his colleague's toes, making an unnecessary enemy. Eventually, he threw up his hands in frustration. "I can't deal with this," he said, and walked out of the nursery. But ...
