Laredo, Tex. - For years, this border city has been miles from just about everything, but Mexico.
Outsiders have long considered that a liability, but Laredo is better positioned than ever to prove its geography an asset. As the U.S., Canada, and Mexico head toward a North American Free Trade Agreement, Laredo expects to profit from its now-central location.
Already, half the nation's trade with Mexico travels through Laredo, which is the nexus of a Pan American highway system stretching from Canada to the horn of South America.
