WHEN first introduced back in the 1980s the microwave oven was seen as a breakthrough in the kitchen: It meant that men could finally cook something and wouldn't starve if their partners did a Shirley Valentine.

Back then the family saloon-sized boxes consisted of little more than a flashy LED light, a timer and, if you had a deluxe model, various other buttons which made no sense but did fill up the panel.

If you're still just using yours for re-heating, you're definitely missing a trick. The last couple of years has seen the microwave making a comeback. Moremanufacturers, more innovation and cheaper prices mean we're spoilt for choice.
