CHOOSING a corner of the thatched dormitory to sleep in, I piled up sheepskins, covered them with a linen sheet and pulled the wool blankets over me. Although not quite up to my House of Fraser Queen-size double bed at home, it was amazingly comfortable.
For a moment, I mused how wonderful it would be if Kirk Douglas from The Vikings would join me on my animal skins to discuss cheese making. Then I passed out, snug in my rural idyll.
My contentment didn't last. Just four hours later I woke in absolute darkness and had a sudden burst of terror which sent me staggering to the door. It was bolted with a primitive wooden hinge.
