Government takes Love Canal off list
The infamous Love Canal site is being taken off of the Superfund list of the nation's most contaminated properties after being cleaned.
The Niagara Falls, N.Y., site has been removed from the list along with another nearby location, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said.
The main Love Canal site that has been deleted is the Hooker 102nd Street landfill, a former 22-acre chemical disposal site owned by Occidental Chemical Corp., formerly Hooker Chemical, and Olin Chemical Corp. The facility, partially bordered by the Love Canal, accepted chemical waste from 1943 to 1971.
