Vindicator of Florida, the country's first food irradiation plant, began its operations earlier this year amid a flurry of consumer activist resistance, scare-tactic advertising and media attention. With a name like "Vindicator," images of the Terminator spring to mind, bringing its own set of public relations problems.
Although food irradiation is not a new concept--the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the process for wheat flour and potatoes in the 1960's--the new facility has re-opened heated discussions about the process.
