Kids' TV shows don't necessarily have to be great. They simply have to be good and well-intentioned, respectful of the audience and genuinely engaging.
By those standards, "The Golden Age of Chicago Children's Television" is a fine book about kids' TV. It isn't great by any means, but it understands what was unique about Chicago kids shows in the '50s, '60s and '70s, and it appreciates what's been lost in the decades since.
For anyone who grew up on "Bozo's Circus" or "Ray Rayner and His Friends" or Bill Jackson's "Cartoon Town," or even those who go all the way back to "Kukla, Fran & Ollie," it is fully engaging and brings ...
